Static discharge can severely damage electronics, even where the discharge voltage is below the threshold for a person to "feel" the discharge. A Static Strap is used to ground yourself to the item you are working with, so that you cannot build up a damaging static charge in the first place! Peace of mind knowing that any further difficulties did not come from your handling of expensive parts and possibly damaging them inadvertantly is golden.
